The Meta Claim

A group legal claim for scam victims who lost money after seeing a fraudulent advert on Facebook or Instagram.

Richardson Hartley Law has joined forces with Humphries Kerstetter solicitors to create a group legal action against Meta.

If you saw an advertisement on Facebook or Instagram that turned out to be a scam, and you lost money as a result, you may be entitled to compensation. This page explains what the claim is about, why we believe Meta can be held legally responsible, and how you can register your interest in joining.

Why We Are Bringing This Claim

Meta earns tens of billions of dollars each year from advertising. A significant share of that advertising has, for many years, consisted of fraudulent promotions including fake investment schemes, bogus cryptocurrency products, impersonation of celebrities and well-known brands, romance scams, and other deceptive content. Meta’s own platforms have provided the infrastructure through which fraudsters reach millions of potential victims.

UK regulators and consumer bodies have documented the scale of the problem. Meta’s platforms consistently account for a disproportionate share of social media-facilitated fraud losses suffered by UK consumers. Police and UK Finance data have repeatedly identified Facebook and Instagram as leading sources of fraud referrals.

Why create this group legal action?

At Richardson Hartley Law we have helped scam victims recover millions of pounds through bank fraud reimbursement schemes. However, there are many people we cannot help as they do not qualify.

We want to help as many fraud and scam victims and possible.

A large number of fraud victims have had their lives ruined after answering scam ads on Facebook and Instagram.

We have decided that we could no longer sit back and do nothing for these people. Our solution is to try to get their lost funds back from Meta. We hope that by holding Meta to account it will encourage the technology giant to stop showing these fake adverts.

Why is Richardson Hartley Law joining forces with Humphries Kerstetter?

A claim against a media giant like Meta requires a lot of resources and expertise. Humphries Kerstetter is an elite boutique law firm that has expertise in bringing a claim against Google.

We feel that it is better to have two law firms for such a big claim, which could be worth billions of pounds and involve tens of thousands of claimants.

How is this different to a bank fraud reimbursement claim?

Bank fraud reimbursement claims sit completely separate to this group legal claim against Meta.

If you have received your fraud money back in full via the bank then you would not be eligible to join the claim.

However, if you lost money as a result of seeing a scam Facebook or Instagram advert and have not received any money back or only been party reimbursed then you can sign up to the legal action.

How the Claim Works

This is a group legal action – sometimes called a group litigation – which means that large numbers of individuals who have suffered similar harm can bring their claims together. This approach is more efficient than individuals pursuing separate claims, and it is better suited to cases where the defendant is a large, well-resourced corporation.

Richardson Hartley Law is working alongside Humphries Kerstetter. Together, we have extensive experience in complex commercial litigation and group actions. We are currently gathering evidence, assessing the strength of individual claims, and building the case.

The action is at the stage of active case development. We are not yet in issued proceedings, but we are inviting victims to register their interest so that we can assess the scope of the claim and begin the formal process.

Am I eligible to join the claim?

You may be eligible to join Meta Group Claims if you can answer yes to the following questions:

  • Did you lose money as a direct result of a scam Facebook or Instagram advert?
  • Did you lose £2,000 or more.
  • Are you based in the United Kingdom?
  • Did you lose money in the past six years?
